The Ins and outs of 2nd grade:
snack:
The students will have the opportunity to enjoy a snack around 9:15 everyday. Please send a HEALTHY snack each day. Some suggestions are: fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, veggies, applesauce, pretzels, juice, granola bars, etc... I will not allow them to eat treats at this time. If they have cookies, desserts, or candy I will ask them to save it for lunch.
**Also, please note that we have a peanut and milk allergy in the room.**
GO folder:
I have provided students with a green folder. This folder is used during the week to send important information home, as well as homework. It is the student's responsibility to bring the folder home every night Monday-Friday and then back to school each day. Parents it is your responsibility to check this folder each night for any school news. Please help your child take responsibility for this folder and learn some independence in taking care of it. It should be your child that gets it out of his/her backpack to show you and your child who packs it in their backpack. These are baby steps for the increased responsibility that comes along with 3rd grade.
Friday folder:
On Friday or the last day of the week the Friday folder will come home with all the school news plus any corrected work your child has done. Please take time to carefully look through your child's work to keep yourself abreast on your child's progress and the concepts we are learning. Discuss their mistakes and praise their successes! What a great learning opportunity for your child.
student reader:
This is an opportunity for students to practice oral reading skills and to share favorite books with the class. Students are usually nervous the first time, but it soon becomes a favorite activity. Each month I will send home a calendar assigning students to be student reader on a particular day. On their day they should bring ONE book to school that they have practiced reading at home. It is very important that they practice reading the book out loud at home so they feel comfortable reading in front of the class. Also, guide them in choosing a book that is at their reading level. Students read at all different levels and the children don't call attention to that. They simply enjoy the stories! The class will gather around them and they will read aloud to us. If they forget their book, I read in their place and there is no makeup. If a child is absent on their day, they may read on the day they return.
birthdays:
We will celebrate each child's birthday! If you wish to send a treat on their birthday, please do so, but make sure to send all the same variety and flavor of treat. I will also send home a birthday bag on or close to your child's birthday. Please enjoy the books inside and then send back to school as soon as you can! If your child has a birthday in the summer then we will celebrate it on their half-birthday. Birthday treats will be enjoyed at the end of the day.
**We do have a child with a peanut and milk allergy!**
BOOK - IT:
This is a program sponsored by Pizza Hut that aims at making lifelong readers. Participation is REQUIRED. The best way to become a better reader is to read. The program runs October through March. Students who meet the reading goal will receive a coupon for a free personal pizza each month. Start reading in September so they are already in some good habits when October starts.
assignment notebooks:
We use assignment notebooks (AN). This is a great tool to help students learn to be organized. Every afternoon the students write their homework in the AN. This will help you know what homework is. On Friday the students write their spelling words in here too. The assignment notebooks are also used to track behavior. If they have a sticker in their notebook that means that they made good choices throughout the day. If they had significant trouble during the day, I will note that in the AN.
homework:
2nd graders will have homework Monday - Friday The purpose of homework is for review of important concepts, but more so to start forming good homework habits for the future school years to come. This is a teaching year. 3rd grade students have more significant homework and consequences for not getting it done.
